In Mark 11, a hungry Jesus approaches a fig tree for a snack. Unfortunately, as Mark tells us, it was not the season for figs, so Jesus found no fruit on the tree. Jesus curses the tree, saying, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” A few verses later when Jesus and his friends pass the fig tree again, it’s withered down to its roots. Well that seems harsh. Sometimes, if we’re honest with ourselves, the Bible is hard. Join us tonight at Journey U as we discuss how to read and understand the Bible. In Judges 11, we read the story of Jephthah, the son of a prostitute who gathered a band of outlaws together and raided the countryside with them. When times were hard the local rulers came to Jephthah to save them from outside enemies. As Jephthah was preparing for battle with these enemies, he made a vow to God that if God would give him the victory then he would sacrifice to God whoever came out of his house first when he returned from war. Sure enough, Jephthah won the battle, returned home, and his daughter ran out to meet him. And Jephthah... kept his vow. There’s a lot more to this story, but what we’ve shared here should raise plenty of questions. Not the least of them — How could this happen?
